The Physiovocal Approach (PA) takes participants through a series of step-by-step practical physiovocal exercises that connects actors to their centre and the outside world, which develops awareness of self and space, develops a deeper connection between spaces within the body and the outside world, and connects sound, imagination and movement. The PA is an ‘approach’ and not a ‘method’; an ‘approach’ is a perspective, while a ‘method’ is a formal, systematic series of incremental exercises. Essentially, it is a ‘matrix’ by which actors are exposed to a set of conditions and frameworks that provide a system in which other things grow and develop.
Participants will discover the expressive potential of the physiovocal instrument. The philosophy about the first/inner, second and third space stems from the continuum between the centre and the outside world. The First/Inner Space is getting in touch with your inner self and your centre. The sequence and method in this initial stage permeates out from the centre and to the outer reaches of your body, and beyond, into the atmosphere above, below, in front and behind in all different directions. The second space is about getting in touch with space and shape both within and outside the body. The third space examines the total physiovocal instrument and its connection with the imagination, energies and dynamics.
Drawing from over 20 years’ experience in voice, the Laban Movement System, Butoh Dance, the the Nobbs Suzuki Praxis, plus other varied intercultural voice and movement practices, the PA has solidified through as certification process at the One Voice Centre in New York.
